1.12 Group structure of ideocalligraphs

The ideocalligraphs are assembled into ten groups: radical ideocalligraphs according to their basic shape (large, tall long or small) and likewise composite ideocalligraphs according to the basic shape of their controlling radical ideocalligraph. Composite ideocalligraphs with controlling symbols are all in group ten.

In the lists (Part 3: 3.1 Radical ideocalligraphs and 3.2 Composite ideocalligraphs), each ideocalligraph is shown above its group and individual number (e.g. 1.5). Its stroke-sequence, indicating how best it is written, is shown in the small boxes to its right. The lists will be followed by an alphabetical Index of Primary Meanings, each with its ideocalligraph's group and individual number.

RADICAL IDEOCALLIGRAPHS

Groups 1 to 4 are radical ideocalligraphs.
Group 5 is composed exclusively of symbols.

Group 1 large eg house:

Group 2 tall eg spruce:

Group 3 long eg eye:

Group 4 small eg star:

Group 5 = eg equals:

COMPOSITE IDEOCALLIGRAPHS

Groups 6 to 10
In Groups 6 to 9 the shape of the controlling root ideocalligraph determines the group to which the composite ideocalligraph belongs. Group 10 is for all composite ideocalligraphs controlled by a symbol.

Group 6 large eg fisherman (controlling radical ideocalligraph man):

Group 7 tall eg forest (controlling radical ideocalligraph spruce):

Group 8 long eg see (controlling radical ideocalligraph eye):

Group 9 small eg space (controlling radical ideocalligraph sun):

Group 10 symbols eg present (controlling radical ideocalligraph time):
